Success in Europe

  • Another successful season for South Woodham Ferrers skaters

Continuing a hugely successful year of International racing, three members from the South Woodham Ferrers Club
completed the season in Zemst, Belgium, at the beginning of September.

After our recent return from the International in Zandvoorde, where Maya Bathgate was the only successful English skater to make the podium, having won third place in the Mini Girls, she had everything to live up to in Zemst.

Being her last year in the International category Minimen group (6-9 years) she proved what a talented and much improved skater she has become this year. Her closely contested races over the two days of competition: Saturday 800m (4×200m track) & 1400m (7×200m track) and Sunday 500m (1×500m road circuit) & 1km (2×500m road circuit) with individual race results of 2nd, 2nd, 1st & 2nd won her a spot on the podium to claim second place overall, making it her fourth International trophy this season.

Also representing the club was Errol Spence racing in the liefhebers group (Flemish category for Veterans, 30+).

For the second year running Errol made his mark in this group over some very closely contested races, which also incorporated the last round of the Belgium Championships.

In what was probably the most challenging group of the weekend, and racing on both track and road, Errol topped the group winning all four of his races:
    Saturday 3km (15×200m track) & 5km (25×200m) and Sunday 1km Sprint (2×500m road) & 10km (20×500m).

Keeping up the clubs success was Robert Whiting who gave an excellent performance in the Senior Men’s. Setting an early pace that saw his competitors unable to challenge his lead, he won both races on the first day of track racing, 8km (40×200m) & 5km (25×200m). Determined to keep his lead, the road circuit threw down slightly more challenging races, 5km (10×500m) & 2.5km (5×500m) however determined to repeat his previous days performance he did not disappoint.

With four first places over the weekend Rob had his first taste of International success when he took top spot onthe podium.

What a great end to the season for our dedicated and successful team.
